Joe Hanley
A Message from the Section Chair

When my brother John was much younger, he liked to spend time in the outdoors. He also had a friend, Tom, who also shared that passion. Tom was a great guy with one shortcoming – he was an egg head.

One year they both decided that they would spend a week or two hiking the Ap-palachian Trail. About the fourth day, after a hard day’s hiking, they pulled off the trail and set up their tent. During the night my brother woke up and in amazement woke up Tom and asked him what he saw.
Tom was dazed and after a moment told my brother that he could see millions of stars. My brother asked him what did that tell him. Tom, reverted to his eggheaded persona and said “Astronomically speaking, it tells me that there are millions of galaxies and potentially billions of planets. Astrologi-cally, it tells me that Mars is in Leo. Theologically, it’s evident there is a master being that is all pow-erful and we are small and insignificant creatures. Time wise, it appears to be approximately a quarter past four and meteorologically, it seems as though we will have another beautiful day for hiking.” Then, as if in retrospect, he asked my brother what it told him.

John looked amazed and shook his head. “It tells me two things; first that you are a complete idiot, and second, someone stole our tent.”

Social scientists tell us that we are social beings and need friends. Personally, I know that I do and that is why I would like to spend some time on this column to thank two people that I consider friends that currently sit on the E-board – but are stepping down.

Lee Thompson currently chairs the Membership Committee. That is his current position but in the time that I have known Lee I believe he has held every available position on the E-board that exists. The rolls of the ASQ state that he has been a member of the Society for twenty-five years. I can believe that for I have known Lee much longer than I have been associated with the Section. In addition to holding innumerable positions on the Section’s E-board, Lee has been a strong contributor to the well-being of the Section. He continually volunteers to perform action items and tasks for the benefit of the Section.

Rose Perry is another member of the E-board that I would like to consider a friend. Rose joined the E-board in 2007 a year after joining the Society. Rose is the current Chair of the newsletter, a position she has held for the majority of the time she has been an E-board member. Rose also is and has been a meaningful force on the board. She has been quite willing to assume other duties when they arise. For instance, last year the Society requested that E-boards across the country create a position called “Voice of the Customer” which is meant to measure how you , the members of the Section feel about both the Society and the Section. The position requires a lot of statistically evaluating your responses to surveys. Rose immediately volunteered for the task and has done a fantastic job with it.

I will miss the both of you and on behalf of the entire Section I’d like to thank both of you for the contributions you have made to both the Section and the Society.
